Middle East Paper Company (MEPCO) announced the successful completion of its Electrification Project as part of the company’s long-term sustainability strategy and commitment to supporting Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative. The project included increasing the imported power capacity from the Saudi Electricity grid by more than 70%, with the project successfully completed and fully energized during the second quarter of 2026. This strategic milestone represents a significant step in MEPCO’s decarbonization roadmap and supports the Kingdom’s transition toward lower-carbon energy sources while reducing dependency on heavy fuel oil.
The project is expected to reduce MEPCO’s carbon footprint by nearly 10% annually, while delivering a significant positive environmental impact following full project commissioning during the current year. In addition, the project is expected to significantly improve MEPCO’s carbon intensity ratio, reflecting the company’s continued focus on operational efficiency, sustainable industrial practices, and environmentally responsible operations.
Beyond its environmental impact, MEPCO is also exploring opportunities related to voluntary carbon markets in the Kingdom through the assessment and certification of carbon reduction achievements in collaboration with relevant sustainability partners and specialized entities. MEPCO emphasized that this achievement marks an important milestone within its broader sustainability transformation journey. Future initiatives will continue to focus on energy efficiency, emissions reduction, and cleaner industrial operations, including the company’s planned Natural Gas conversion project targeted within the coming years.
Through strategic investments and operational transformation initiatives, MEPCO continues to strengthen its commitment to building a more sustainable industrial future aligned with the Kingdom’s long-term environmental and economic ambitions.
